My real name is Malcolm Cannon, but everyone calls me Smiley. Call me what you like; I’m just glad you noticed me. While I got your attention, let me tell you a little about myself. I was born and raised in the City of Newark, located in the state of New Jersey. Like you didn’t already know that though. Anyways, I’ve been writing for as long as I can remember. It started way back in the days with picture prompts; my teacher would slap one of those bad boys on the table, and I would go to work.
Oh, you don’t know what a picture prompt is? It’s a paper with a picture on it, and you have to write a story on it. I never did any of my other work besides math and art 😅. But that’s none of your business; it made me who I am today—a WRITER, well, I don’t like to think of myself as a writer. More like a CREATOR or IDEARIST, as I like to call it.
Some time after high school when I grew up and was an adult, I had my first baby boy; Malakai. I had a lot on my mind around that time. I was a new father, and I got this kid and don’t know a thing about making him happy. So when I would finally get him to go to sleep, I would stare at him and just get lost in my thoughts about what my son would be when he got older, hopefully not a cry baby 😂.
There’s a back story to me and my son; when he was born, I felt like he saved me, like he was my reset button, like he was my hero. With that idea, I thought, what if my son was a superhero? I began to write “The Book of Dreamz.” This was way back in 2013, but I didn’t act on the comic books then.
One day I went to my friend Tone's house, aka Milk, for my regular rituals (no demonic rituals), and him and Amina, aka Mu, were in his apartment smoking, “APARTMENT 6” that is! Brainstorming ideas, all types. So I began writing little ideas down I had, and I went to pitch it to them. Turns out they liked it. I decided right there I wanted to make movies and shows; I wanted to become the next John Singleton or Ice Cube for sure, so I kept writing stories. But then I found out how much it cost to make films and how hard it was to get picked up. I got frightened and backed off.
It wasn’t until sometime in the Summer of 2017 when I met a guy named Steve through an artist named Tony Cook. Steve had this dope character Rashida and a bunch of notes on her but no story written. I had the skills to write a story, so I asked if I could write his story free of charge. I just wanted the credit and experience. This here would be the official start of my comic book writer/creator journey.
In the Year of 2018, Steve and I released a comic book to the world named “Micro Wars.” This would be my first official comic book release ever. I was so proud of us….but I wasn’t satisfied. Although I was a part of this amazing project, I didn’t have full control over the creativity department. I knew how creative I really can be, so I wanted to prove that to myself.
I created the story “Freaks Come Out at Night,” a horror series. I love horror and zombies, so it was only right. I was about 20 pages of 25 in when I was admitted to the hospital for a hole in my lower intestine. This didn’t stop me. On my hospital bed, I was still working on getting the comic released with tubes in me and all I didn’t care. I was determined to put this out if I was going to die…..and I did successfully on February 29th, 2019, on the leap day in the leap year! It was meant to be. I even put that as the date in the script, and it appears on the first page to let you know my target date to release was written way before I released it to challenge myself.
But after I came home from the hospital, the people weren’t responding to the comic like I wanted. I didn’t realize it was going to take a lot more work to release comics and how content you need to be with it all. So instead of trying to figure it out, I lost all hope right along with my job. I was two kids in, and life was a disaster. I gave up comics; I mean, I would still give advice or help others with their stories, but as for me, I gave up. I remember Steve saying, “you’ll be back, you love telling stories….” or something like that I’m not too sure. Well, I guess he was right cause then a miracle happened.
MAY 2022, something amazing happened. So I was surfing IG (Instagram), and I came across some dope black comic artists. One of the artists I spoke to wasn’t one of those bougie artists. He replied quickly and all. Everything went smooth. That artist's name was Osikabor “Osil” Emmanuel. And how it went is I asked him to make me a comic, I gave him my story, and he brought my story to life just how I envisioned it in my head. He was off a little bit but it’s all good, but the important thing was he understood everything I meant. We had great communications; I like to say I bet he’d disagree, but it worked, and that’s how we were able to bring you “The Book of Dreamz A-1 Dreamz are Reality” for the first time on the date October 1st, 2022…..and the rest is history!
